The Nairobi government plans to light up Kibera within the next 60 days, officials have said.
Transport, Roads and Public works county executive committee Mohamed Abdullahi, said plans are underway to ensure proper lighting in the slum.
“We are going to light up Kibera within a period of 60 days with effect from tomorrow,” said Abdullahi.
“Lighting is possible within that time frame because we are taking advantage of already existing infrastructure which in this case are Kenya Power infrastructure such as poles."
He said implementation of the project will start immediately since the county government has approved it.
"The Governor (Evans Kidero) has already issued an executive order for the project to continue thus we don't require any other approval from city hall for the same," he assured.
“The entire county is going to benefit from the project with Kibera sub-county being one of the areas given emphasis,” added Abdullahi.
He spoke on Wednesday at Old Kibera Primary School during a stakeholders’ meeting on flood mitigation and lighting.
