A suspect accused of stealing a bag at the Rift Valley General Hospital on Wednesday told a Nakuru court that he was mistaken for a thief and badly beaten.
Peter Ndirangu told the court that he needs medical attention and requested that he be taken to hospital because he has injuries.
"I am not a thief and they mistook me. They have beaten me so badly and the whole body aches. I wish the court can order that I should be taken to hospital for treatment," he said.
Ndirangu is accused of stealing a bag and a power bank, all valued at Sh6,500 and a property of Keneth Owino.
It is alleged that he snatched the small bag and was running away before he was caught up by a mob who started beating him.
He is alleged to have committed the offence on September 22, 2015 at the Rift Valley General Hospital in Nakuru.
Appearing before Senior Principal magistrate Liz Gicheha, he pleaded not guilty and was released on a surety bond of Sh20,000 with an alternative cash bail of Sh10,000.
Gicheha ordered Ndirangu to be taken to hospital for treatment and remanded at the Nakuru Gk Prisons if he shall have not raised the bail.
The case will be heard on October 27.
