Schools in Kibra have been put on notice of possible closure following reports that there are several of them operating illegally.

Langata District Quality Assurance Officer Peter Oina has said there are more than 100 schools operating within Kibra.

Speaking at Soweto Primary School during an education and security event, Oina said, “Kibra alone has 60 registered schools but surprisingly, there are a lot of schools around; more than 100 that enrol children.”

He reiterated on the requirements of schools as per the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Education which include employing qualified teachers and balancing teacher to pupil ratio among other legalities.

“Non-qualified teachers are not allowed to teach. If we get such a case, the law shall take its course. Schools that are operating without proper registration shall all be closed down when we begin the crackdown to end the dominance of quacks in the education sector,” he said.

The crackdown is also aimed at weeding out schools that do not maintain proper sanitation as well as those without the required size of playing field for children.

Oina also urged teachers to take centre stage in teaching life skills which involve sex education and other social issues.

“Teachers must teach life skills that entails sex education. Education has no meaning if there is no morality,” he pointed out.
