Persons with disability in Mitaboni area of Kathiani Sub-County have raised concerns neglect by the government and the society despite strides taken to formulate enabling legislation.

They have decried what they call slow implementation of reforms as outlined in the Persons with Disabilities Act and the constitution saying they have been neglected.

They feel that people with disability are still seen as outcasts and they are now demanding for the speedy implementation of respective laws to cater for their interests.

Speaking in Mitaboni Social Hall during a local leaders consultative meeting with the public, Winston Omondi said that devolution should take place bearing in mind the interests of persons with disabilities as outlined by the two documents.

He lamented that more than ten years after Act was passed, people with disabilities continue to be discriminated in the distribution of national resources.

He observed that many institutions including schools and hospital have not modified their buildings to include ramps and other facilities that are meant to cater for their needs.

Omondi called for sensitisation of the members of public to realise that people with disabilities deserve equal rights.

"We are never prioritised in any facility as stated by the law. We have to struggle before we acquire any government service in this area yet the constitution states well that the welfare of the disabled people must be catered for," he regretted.
