A university don has called for the review of the Basic Education Act 2013, arguing it sidelined other education stakeholders from participating in the formulation of policies affecting the education sector in the country.
Speaking at Moi High School-Gesusu in Masaba South Sub-County during the school's Education Day on Sunday, Winston Akalla, University of Nairobi's Kikuyu Campus School of Education dean, called for an overhaul of the Basic Education Act 2013, to ensure all education stakeholders in the country are involved in the formulation of education policies.
Akalla pointed out Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs) as some of the education stakeholders in the country whose role is not clearly defined in the new Act.
"Failure to engage all education stakeholders before coming up with policies affecting the education sector in this country is to blame for challenges facing implementation of such policies as they were hurriedly enacted without all-inclusive stakeholders consultations," said Akalla.
Akalla warned against drafting and enacting of education laws and policies without adequate consultations among all stakeholders, arguing such a scenario would pose a legal challenge to the implementers of the policies. He said this will in turn lead to the detriment of the education sector in the country.
