Inmates at the Kisii GK Main Prison have been urged to shun alcohol and drug abuse to be useful members of the society once they are freed.
The inmates celebrated the Annual Africa Prisons Correction Day on Friday and benefited from a guidance and counselling session where they were advised on various ways of avoiding addiction to drugs.
Addressing Journalists at the facility, Julius Gitari, who works with a non-governmental organisation offering free guidance and counselling, said that the inmates need to be empowered in many areas so that they can change their attitude about life while in prison.
"We need to guide and counsel them so that they can change their attitude while inside here and when they get out they will be people who can help the society," said Gitari.
According to Gitari drug addiction has made many inmates fail to change their attitude towards life even after leaving jail.
He observed that addiction to drugs has also led to the increase in crime saying it was a contributor to the large number of inmates in Kenyan prisons.
