Parents within Kiambu County have been urged to educate their children on sex and its consequences.

Kiambu Primary school head teacher Paul Kagiri said parents are obliged to tell their children the importance of abstaining from any sexual behaviour which might ruin their lives.

The teacher said children were gifts from God and for them to become responsible adults, parents should give them good guidance and advise.

“The importance of abstaining from sexual behavior must be taught well as this will prevent children from contracting diseases as well as prevent early pregnancies which lead to school dropouts. Parents should not stop telling their children that if they indulge in sexual activities, they are more likely to get unwanted pregnancies which may lead to abortion that may in turn lead to untimely deaths,” said the head teacher.

He added: “Abortion can also lead to destruction of the uterus hence causing infertility.”

Kagiri said he welcomes the introduction of sex education as a compulsory subject in all schools but is opposed to government's plan to issue school going girls with contraceptives.

He said issuing children with condoms and birth control pills will encourage them to indulge in careless sexual behaviour which may affect them adversely and thus the move should not be embraced.

"The government should have involved parents and teachers when discussing some pertinent sensitive matters before passing it over to school administrations," he said.

Ann Wanjiku, a parent said she does not support the move by the government to issue contraceptives to school going children as it dilutes her cultural beliefs besides encouraging sex at tender ages.

Wanjiku claimed that by issuing the children with contraceptives, the government was giving young children the green light to engage in sexual behaviours which she termed as immoral and unacceptable before God’s eyes.
