The Red Cross department in Kikuyu has launched a programme aimed at educating students on the first aid measures to undertake in cases of emergencies.
Speaking in his office on Monday, Kikuyu Red Cross department chairman Mr Simon Sauka said the programme was aimed at helping students save lives in case of emergencies before they are taken to hospital.
He said lives are lost due to students not applying the required first aid measures.
Sauka said they also plan to start first aid associations in schools that will deal with first aid matters adding that the group will comprise of few students who will fully be trained on how to give good first aid in case of emergencies.
"Schools lack first aid skills and when fire tragedies and other accidents occur, the victims suffer and some even die as they do not receive the first aid required,” said Sauka.
Fanuel Mukwana, Ondiri Secondary school principal said the programme will be of great benefit.
He however said that the major challenge schools face is lack of well equipped first aid kits.
The programme will begin in September when schools reopen.
