Five people, among them a four year old boy, suffered serious injuries after they were attacked by a leopard believed to have strayed from a tea farm in Mariaini village, Gatundu North Sub County.

The victims were rushed to Igegania District Hospital by good Samaritans who came to their aid. 

They suffered injuries on their heads and arms.

Confirming the incident, Kamwangi Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) boss Monicah Njeri said the game rangers shot dead the animal at Gathoo River in Mariaini village.

"We have so far been able to kill one of the leopards in Mariaini and the patrol to search the rest will continue for three consecutive days to calm down the situation and bring back peace in Mariaini," she said.

The KWS officers in Gatundu North sub county who rushed to the area moments after the attack shot dead one of the leopards believed to have caused havoc among Mariaini residents after a five hour struggle.

She said the animal had strayed from Kangari area in Kieni Forest before killing and eating sheep in several homes.

"The four year old boy had spotted the animal in their coffee farm before it attacked him but villagers who rushed to his aid suffered a similar fate when the leopard turned on them," said the officer.

The attack comes barely a day after the residents made a call to have the animal ejected from the area.
