Four people were on Wednesday arraigned before a Kisumu court for looting from a truck that had overturned in Muhoroni, Kisumu County.
Timothy Omollo, Christopher Opondo, Bovince Korir and Martin Imundo faced a second count of attacking police officers who arrived at the scene.
They denied both charges before resident magistrate Catherine Owino. They were charged of committing the offence on June 20.
The court heard that, the haulage truck heading to Kisumu failed to negotiate a curve and overturned spilling sugar on the road side.
The truck was transporting sugar to Kisumu from Muhoroni. When the driver approached Kuole area in Muhoroni, he was unable to navigate a sharp curve resulting in the truck veering off the road and overturning.
Several bags of sugar fell on the ground.
It is alleged that the accused rushed to the scene and helped themselves to the sugar.
The driver, who was unhurt, called his employers who reported to the police. Uniformed officers from a nearby police station were deployed to the scene.
The accused allegedly stoned the officers who were trying to stop them from stealing the sugar.
It is alleged that there was a mob at the scene, but dispersed when police arrived but the four were persistent and tried to drive the police officers away.
They were released on a cash bail of Sh10,000 each with surety of a similar amount pending the hearing of the case on August 4.
