Developers in Kisii County seeking to put up new houses will have to pay construction levies or risk a Sh300,000 fine should they be caught undertaking projects without a approval from the National Construction Authority.

According to the NCA regional coordinator Jonah Cheserek, all construction projects must be approved and the contractors undertaking them must be registered.

Cheserek who spoke during an interview in his office on Wednesday said all projects being undertaken in the county will attract a levy of 0.5 per cent of the total value of the project, adding that the rule also applies to construction of personal houses.

The move, added the regional coordinator, is aimed at taming the increasing cases of buildings collapsing due to unapproved and poor construction measures by the developers.

He said there was need for heightened public sensitisation on the policy, saying the regulations aim to encourage professionalism in the construction industry.

Developers who fail to comply with the rule will be brought to book, stated Cheserek.
