The government has been urged to hasten its plans to lift the ban on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) as one way of improving the country's food security.
Speaking during a farmers' day at Ndeiya chief's camp on Thursday, Ndeiya Division Agriculture Stakeholders Forum Chairman Moses Njiriri said that a lift on the ban will ensure Ndeiya and the country as a whole become food secure.
"The announcement by Deputy President William Ruto that the government was planning to lift the ban on GMOs in Kenya a few days ago could not have come at a better time for us the people of Ndeiya,” said Njiriri.
He added: "The answer to the problem of food insecurity that has faced the people of Ndeiya for a long time could be in GMOs. We urge the government to expedite the process of lifting the ban.”
Njiriri noted that GMO crops have been proved to cause no harm asking the government to emulate South Africa which has legalised the crops.
He further said that the fallacy that Kenyans had on GMOs has since been demystified and that many were now calling for the ban imposed in 2010 to be lifted.
