The national government has been urged to introduce school feeding a programme in Primary schools, as a way of reliving them the burden feeding pupils due to poor yields that the region has been producing.

Speaking on Thursday at Nyansakia Primary school in Kisii County, area parents said the move will see many pupils join institutions, following a rapid drop that has been reported during the second term.

They said the region has been receiving poor yields in the last five years, raising questions about the ability of the county to handle food security matters.

“Many children have literally dropped out of school because of lack of food in their homes. They have resolved to do odd jobs for the sake of sustaining themselves and that is why it is important for the government to help initiate a school feeding programme,” said Mr. Peter Ongaga, chairman of the school.

His sentiments were echoed by the institution’s head Mr. Alex Oribo, who said the situation might escalate if the government did not chip in to help children from dropping out of school.

“I am really touched with this request, my institution alone has seen more than ten pupils drop out of school and this really concerns me. I call upon the government to implement this noble idea by our parents,” he said.

According to statistics released recently by Kisii County Assistant commissioner in charge of education Mrs. Diana Wekesa, at least 200 pupils from primary schools in the region have dropped out of school on hunger related issues.
