Kiambu County has put up hundreds of litter bins in Thika Town to help with waste disposal in the industrial town.
Environment CeC Esther Njuguna has revealed that her department has already put more than 300 bins in the Thika Sub-County.
Speaking when she led Governor William Kabogo in issuing water tanks to various groups in the area on Wednesday, Njuguna said that the bins will be erected in various places as there a bad history of waste disposal in major towns in the county.
She added that residents have a tendency of vandalising the bins for sale to Jua Kali artisans. She warned the vandals saying that those caught will pay heavily penalised.
Njuguna at the same time urged residents to start conserving water.
“We are heading into the dry spell and we need to make them understand what we mean by conservation. That’s why we are disbursing these tanks to ease the process,” she said.
The CeC called on Kiambu residents to ensure they conserve both the environment and the water to improve the county’s climate. She added that planting trees should be a priority especially in the semi-arid areas of Kiambu.
