Community Health Workers at Witeithie estate in Juja on Wednesday saved a woman from bleeding to death after giving birth in her house.
According to the area Public Health officer Flora Gakui who arrived at the incident immediately, the woman had lost a lot of blood and by the time they took her to hospital she was in a critical condition.
Gakui said that the infant had however been delivered safely.
"The cries from the infant alerted the neighbours who arrived at the homestead to help," she said.
The health workers were immediately called and helped the woman get to hospital after reducing the bleeding.
Area assistant chief James Nyoike revealed that a number of women in the area had a tendency of delivering in their homes.
"Many expectant mothers fail to go for medical checkups which puts them at risk of losing their lives," the assistant chief said.
The health officer has urged expectant mothers in the area to attend pre-natal clinics and ensure they deliver at the Kiandutu Level Four Hospital, which is the nearest public health facility.
“Let’s keep our children healthy before and after birth despite the hospital being far. Maternity fees were eliminated by the government a long time ago. You should be visiting the hospitals for your own sake and that of the children,” she said.
