Political leaders in Kiambu County have asked youths to apply for Identification Cards (IDs) and register as voters in the upcoming voter listing exercise.
Speaking at separate meetings, Governor William Kabogo and Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a urged youths to participate in the exercise so as to be able to exercise their democratic right during elections.
Speaking in Thika on Monday, Ng’ang’a said that youths have always been left out of voter registration because they lack IDs.
The Thika legislator noted with concern that the IDs that were lying uncollected at the Thika offices were not for the area youths, stating that most of the youths she interacts with especially from the slums, have never applied for the crucial document.
She vowed to sensitise her constituents to apply for the documents.
And while addressing the press in Kiambu town, Governor Kabogo said he will ensure that youths register as voters.
The governor noted that some youths fail to register as voters citing the long distance to the registration centres but said he will request the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct door-to-door registration.
The two politicians are in the process of amassing for votes from their supporters before the next general election where Kiambu is expected to experience a stiff competition.
A number of people have shown interest in vying for seats both for the Thika parliamentary seat and Kiambu gubernatorial seat.
