Kibera location Chief Christine Litswa has urged residents to keep drainages clean to avoid the spread of diseases during the rainy season.

This comes after residents complained of dirty drainage systems in the area arguing that it could lead to spread of diseases during the said El-Nino period.

However, the chief wants residents to keep their environment clean by unblocking the drainage system to allow for the smooth floor of waste water.

“I would like to tell residents to clean the drainages to avoid the overflow of dirty water during the rainy season. We really need to keep our environment clean because we do not want to lose lives through waterborne diseases as a result of dirty water,” Chief Litswa said on Wednesday.

Some residents have initiated a cleanup exercise near their houses.

“Drainages are being cleaned every morning to keep the area clean and curb diseases,” said Alice Kuloba.

“Prevention is always the best medicine. I have decided to clean my area to remove all solid dirt that usually leads to blocked drainages. I wake up every morning to check if there is any solid disposal that can block the drainage and pick them up then I dispose them off at the National Youth Service garbage collection area,” added Byram Kimeo.
