The Kiambu County government has opened the Paradise Lost Mbai stone age caves in a move to commemorate and celebrate the Mau Mau freedom fighters in the county.
The opening of the caves was overseen by the wife of the veteran freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi, Mrs Mukami Kimathi and was presided by Governor William Kabogo.
This comes after the freedom fighters in the county decried negligence by the government.
Speaking on Monday in Kiambu Sub-County, Governor Kabogo noted that the caves have great historic importance not only to Kiambu but also to the people of Kenya as a whole.
He said the freedom Kenyans enjoy today was brought about by the heroes and heroines who sheltered in the caves which according to him should be preserved and protected in a bid to preserve the county's cultural heritage.
“These caves are of great historic importance to this county and country. We are setting up these monuments for the remembrance of the fighters and we hope it acts as a tourist attraction,” he said.
Also in attendance was Kiambu County Women Representative Annah Gathecha who vowed to retain and protect the culture of the people by ensuring such places are honoured and kept tidy now that she is an elder in the Kikuyu Council of Elders.
