Residents of Kihoto slums in Naivasha will benefit from a clean water project that will see a majority of the households get access to the scarce commodity.
This was announced on Monday by Simon Wanyoike, an official from the Nakuru County’s youth department after touring the project’s site.
According to Wanyoike, the project is expected to be completed before October.
“We are liaising with the National Youth Service and other youths recruited by the county in the slum upgrade project to ensure free flow of water in this area in less than two months,” he noted.
This, he says, is an initiative of the World Bank in collaboration with the County government in ensuring clean and affordable supply of water in all slums.
“Poor drainage and sanitation has rendered slum dwellers to waterbone diseases because of drinking dirty water. The situation here (in Kihoto) has been very serious because of congestion and poor sewerage systems,” he explained.
The project is to be incorporated into the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP) to help fight cholera in slums.
