Kikuyu Red Cross chairman has said Kikuyu schools will be provided with first aid kits in addition to being trained on basic first aid techniques.
Speaking in his office on Wednesday, Simon Sauka said that some schools in the area have had the training but lack the equipments.
He said that first aid kits were very important in learning institutions as they might save a live or lives in case of emergencies.
Sauka said the Red Cross department in the area is working closely with schools to ensure that they not only benefit by gaining training on first aid but also get the equipments in schools.
He said that the kits will be supplied to all schools in the area and a training programme will be held to help students learn basic first aid techniques.
The chairman pointed out that it was important to set aside this programme as students will greatly benefit and be of great help in case of emergencies in schools.
Sauka cited the Stephjoy fire tragedy stating that it would have been better handled if students had been taught on how to deal with such emergencies.
He said most students do not even know how to use fire extinguishers yet many schools have them within the school compound.
"We are determined to help our students in schools to gain some knowledge on dealing with emergencies. This will not only be of importance in schools but we will have given them knowledge to carry out even when they are out of school. This programme will soon go beyond schools and it also aims at helping locals in the area deal with emergencies wisely,” said Sauka.
He added: “Most of the locals do not know how to administer first aid and they prefer the traditional ways. We are aiming to reach to such people by teaching these students who will take the experience back home."
