A total of Sh3 billion has been allocated by the exchequer to the Kenya Institute of Medical Training Colleges (KIMTC) to help it in capacity building.

National KIMTC chairman for Board of Management (BOM), Prof Phillip Kaloki said the money will be used to recruit more staff.

“We want to expand the college and make it remain a premier institution in the training of medical courses in the country,” he said.

He announced new parallel intakes for the students with an interest in nursing beginning from September this year.

“We have realised that we are locking away other ambitious students interested in medical courses. We may start with at least 50 students as we pick off," he said.

Kaloki was speaking on Thursday in KIMTC, Kisii County campus when he paid the institution an official visit.

He said plans are underway for the college to expand to the remaining six counties in the country.

Currently, the institution has 42 branches countrywide.

“The expansion programme will benefit more students wishing to take up medical courses,” said Kaloki.

“We are out to fulfill the Jubilee manifesto which advocates for training of more personnel that will plug the hole in the manpower service in our health sector,” he added.

He further announced that they may enter into a private-public partnership programme in addressing student accommodation challenges in the institution.

“We have a significant number of our students that are not accommodated within the campuses. Once the board approves of the plan,” we will be able to see private parties coming in to help construct hostels to address this problem,” he said.

College principal, Ms Gertrude Opiyo said the college is introducing new courses in radiography and orthopaedics.
