Kisii residents have been cautioned against handling sick animals to avoid spread of diseases to humans.

Kisii Level 5 Hospital Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Anne Mogere said the animals may be infected with a killer disease that is dangerous to human beings. She advised residents to allow veterinary doctors to deal with such livestock.

The advise comes after two men were admitted at Kisii level 5 Hospital after handling an animal infected with anthrax in Ogembo town, Kisii County.

She said the two were diagnosed with anthrax which is commonly found in cows, buffalos and hippos but can be transmitted to human beings through handling dead carcass or an infected animal.

Dr Mogere said the two are out of danger and advised anybody who came into contact with the animal to seek medical attention immediately.

Preliminary reports released by the Ogembo Nursing Home nurse Hope Onkendi indicated that the villagers had joined the victim on Tuesday evening to slaughter his ailing animal. They decided to carry some of the meat to feed their dogs.

It’s therefore not clear whether they ate the meat or not as they started complaining of body aches which progressed into swelling of their bodies before they were rushed to the hospital.
