Kisumu Entertainers have asked the Kenya Music Copyright Society to come up with a single licensing system for music consumers.

Speaking from a Kisumu hotel on Tuesday morning, the event organiser Wycklife Omondi said that Kenya Music Copyright Society should partner with other music group and have a single licence.

"As entertainers, we have no problem with Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK) and Kenya Association of Music Producers (KAMP). What we want is that they come with a strategy of having a single licence," said Omondi.

He said, "They should see how to work with the music copyright. It is very discouraging to pay for more than two licences to play music. Let the relevant authority come up with with a single licence that we are ready to pay."

Omondi stated that there are many licences that music consumers pay for.

"We got NEMA licence, council licenses, PRISK MCL. If you add them together, you will be running at a loss. At the end of the day, we will be doing nothing and it's like you will be working for the licences," said Omondi.

He added, "We call on them to come up with one blanket licence which will enable us work together and pay royalties to artists easily."

KAMP administrative manager Timothy Mutinda said that there are talks to have a single licensing system for music consumers. He said that initially, there was an MoU with the three licensing groups, but it did not materialise.
