Kisumu county government is set to introduce mini grid energy system to step up the energy system especially in clean energy.

Speaking to Journalists on Tuesday afternoon, Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma in his office just after his South East Asian trip said that the mini grid will be channelled to hospitals which need reliable power system.

“There is an opportunity for us to make our own grid, a small one which can deal with the community which is more efficient than that of Kenya Power which is on and off most of the times,” said Ranguma.

Kisumu CeC for Energy Lilian Ogombo said that the county can harness plenty of sunshine available into energy.

“We are advantage in Kisumu to have eight hour of sunshine in the day of temperature between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. We can harness solar energy for the sake of the rural communities,” said Ogombo.

She added, “We did learn a lot about off grid energy systems. We looked at cases of increasing energy system especially reliable energy in the rural communities in Kisumu.”

Ogombo said that the mini grid will be as good as the electricity channelled in the national grid. Kisumu Governor said that while in Manila, they participated in the various sessions of the Asia clean energy forum.

“A lot of things are being done in south East Asia which could be similar here in Kisumu. We had a full week of discussion with the Asian counter parts to look at the various options to adopt in Kisumu,” said Ranguma.

He said the energy system are easily implementable, closer to environmental standards will bring a lasting change.
