Kisumu MCAs raised concerns over the sate of Early Childhood Development (ECD) after the ECD report was tabled on Wednesday afternoon.

The report was tabled by Mogosi Ward representative Paul Achayo and seconded by Maina Koko.

Some of the issues that the Kisumu MCAs are concerned about included the standards of classrooms, teachers’ salaries and the deployment of teachers.

South East Nyakach MCA Petronilla Omondi said that most the ECD classes don't meet the standards required. Omondi also questioned the budget allocation for ECD classrooms in each ward in Kisumu County.

Railways Ward Representative Isaiah Onyango said that there are concerns raised on how ECD teachers have been deployed. Onyango said the salaries for the teachers should be reviewed adding that some of the teachers deployed in his ward come as far as Nyakach Sub-County. He said that some of the teachers expected in his ward have not yet reported.

However, nominated MCA Caroline Agwanda said that despite the concerns, classrooms are accessible and friendly to children with disability.

The assembly’s speaker Elijah Omondi said the ECD committee should present the report in a months time after conducting more investigations into the issues raised by the MCAs.
