Kisumu government will invest Sh75 million in a street lighting project a county official has revealed.
Kisumu City Manager Doris Ombara said the project will commence once the tendering process is completed.
Briefing journalists on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ forum at City Hall, Ombara said the lights will help boost security in the city.
She said that strategic interventions are being rolled out to improve the image of the town towards transforming it into a 24-hour economy.
Streets in the central business district will also have security cameras to help fight crime.
She said that the county is planning a major overhaul in a bid to make it business friendly for investors by putting up social amenities that can enable longer business hours.
Among the plans set for implementation include rerouting of traffic in the city, relocation of hawkers, improvement of refuse collection and massive investment in the real estate.
Ombara said the county under the Kisumu Urban Projects has allocted Sh4.5 billion to rehabilitate vandalised street lights.
She disclosed that they will also partner with Kenya Power to begin the exercise to increase lighting coverage.
The priority areas include Oginga Odinga Streets, Angawa Street, Obote Road area, Kenyatta Avenue, Milimani area and Estates within town among others.
