A network that brings together people from 16 informal settlements in Kisumu has decried the poor state of roads in the settlements.
Kisumu Informal Settlement Network on Thursday said the poor state of roads hampers movement and business in the settlements.
Through their Chairman Eliasha Osanya, the slum dwellers said the poor state of roads also hampers service delivery into their areas.
Mr Osanya said the access road situation is worrying and need to be fixed by the county government to ease transportation.
“There are no roads within the slums, the county government of Kisumu should come to our aid. We cannot take our people to the hospital using the ambulances the county bought since the roads are poor,” he said.
Addressing a press conference in Kisumu, Mr Osanya singled out Bandani slum as one that has no proper road network.
He said the slum dwellers are encountering numerous challenges as a result of the poor state of the access roads.
The chairman announced that locals will contribute funds to be able to improve the status of the road network in the area.
He said they have received unfulfilled promises from the county government over the road network.
“The promises that are not honoured are now too much and residents from Bandani have resolved to collect funds and improve the road network on their own to end the long suffering,” he said.
Mr Osanya said locals are in dire need of county government services noting that political differences among the leaders should not be used to victimise the locals.
