Lake Nakuru National Park has started vaccination animals at the park to prevent spread of anthrax that has been reported at the Park and in some other parts of the county.

Speaking to the press at Nakuru National Park on Monday, Kenya Wild Life Service (KWS) Central Rift Director Mr Geroge Osuri said all grazers will be vaccinated against anthrax and other animal diseases.

He said that recent outbreak of anthrax where 100 cows and two rhinos were reported dead has necessitated the exercise to prevent any loss of wildlife.

He said that veterinary doctors and specialists have already been deployed to the park for the exercise.

“We have embarked on a vaccination exercise for all grazers within the Nakuru Park,” he said.

The official who confirmed the death of wildlife in the park last week said that other measures have been taken to curb spread of the disease.

He said that they are working with the Nakuru county government to treat a sewer located within the Park suggesting that poor waste disposal could have led to the outbreak of anthrax.

“We are taking measures including treating sewer plants located close to the park to prevent outbreaks,” he said.

Osuri said that samples of the carcasses have been taken to government laboratories in Nairobi for more analysis.

County Agriculture Executive Stanley Chepkwony said that measures had been taken to curb spread that had been reported in Nakuru East, West and Rongai sub counties.
