Maseno University Environmental Club which comprise students on Thursday sensitised the area residents on the importance of recycling plastic bags as a way of conserving environment.
Led by the club patron Charles Ombeva who is a lecture at the institution, the club moved from household to household educating the locals on the dangers involved in releasing plastic bags into the environment.
“Plastic bags are everywhere with us and when disposed to the environment, they cause a lot of havoc to the soil and its living organisms. Furthermore they don’t decompose making the situation worse,” said Ombeva.
He said they chose to educate on the plastic bags because the area had seen an increase in plastic bags disposal. The residents were educated on how to often re-use the plastic bags until they are worn out.
They were also urged to be burning plastic bags instead of exposing them to the environment. “We should have legislations by the parliament that can put a stop to the production and usage of plastic bags because if nothing is done soon then our environment will be in jeopardy,” added Ombeva.
According to the beneficiaries of the sensitisation, they applauded the club for teaching them on the positive sides of plastic bags which they commonly use.
“From what I have learnt, our environment is at stake. I use plastic bags and dispose them off without any consideration, but now I won't because I now understand the effects of the bags,” said Sheila Ochieng.
