A 46-year-old man was on Wednesday arraigned before a Kisumu court facing charges of alleged assault and causing grievous bodily harm.
According to the prosecution, George Marende of Kisumu's Nyalenda area in June 25, 2015 attacked Martin Okumu in Nyalenda injuring his left eye, an act that resulted into his blindness.
It is alleged that a disagreement arose when Marende accused Okumu of trying to snatch his wife from him. Okumu was taken to hospital where he was treated and discharge before he filed a police report of what had happened.
This led to Marende’s arrest in June 28, 2015. The prosecution further alleged that the accused sent threatening messages to the complainant warning him not to report the matter to police.
The prosecution said the matter is still under further investigations. Marende who denied the charges, however, told the court that there was no need of continuing with the case claiming that the matter was petty and could be sorted out of court.
Kisumu Chief Magistrate Catherine Owino dismissed the call saying that the complainant was willing to proceed with the case.
Marende was released on cash bail of Sh10,000 with a surety of a similar amount pending the hearing of the case in August 27, 2015.
