Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has urged school leavers to enroll in technical training colleges to acquire skills and knowledge that will help them to cope with the first changing demands of the job market.
Mandago said on Sunday that technical skills will open doors for young people to exploit the emerging opportunities in the job market.
"Students should not think that their form four certificate is the end of their studies. They should join technical training colleges. Currently, there is a shortage of technical officers and soon we will be hiring them,” the governor said.
He said technical colleges will help address the high rate of unemployment among youth.
"In this financial year we have sponsored 600 students to pursue technical courses at the Rift Valley Technical Training Institute where we will fully cater for their education until they complete their studies. With the support from well-wishers, we plan to sponsor more in the next financial year,” he added.
He also urged youths to embrace agriculture as a business which will help improve their living standards.
He said some youth are getting as much as Sh100,000 per month from their agribusinesses.
