Maseno University students are calling on the bodaboda operators who provide them with transport services to ensure the helmets they give to passengers are clean.

The students said even though the operators are adhering to traffic rules by providing them with the helmets, they should also ensure they are clean to avoid spread of diseases.

"The helmets provided are very dirty and wearing them is uncomfortable, we end up not using them even though it is a requirement," said Gabriel Alai a student at the institution.

The students, who spoke on Thursday, said they fear contracting skin diseases.

"Dirt is known to be harbour many diseases, I would rather not risk my life by wearing a dirty helmet even though I am aware that I need once I board a motorbike,” said Christine Achieng.

"It is the responsibility of the operators to provide us with clean helmets, or else we will seek  for alternative means of transport. They should just be responsible," said Pius Ochieng.

The Maseno University bodaboda operators who ply the route from college to Siriba campus had introduced helmets for their passengers in line with the traffic rules.

However, according to the operators’ association secretary Harison Ong'undi, they do their best in maintaining cleanliness but the students do not appreciate their efforts.
