Matatu operators in Kikuyu have been warned against tampering with speed governors.
Speaking in her office on Tuesday after a traffic crackdown that saw four matatus operators arrested for tampering with speed governors, Kikuyu traffic base commander Ms Elizabeth Wakuloba said that matatu operators had developed a method of tampering with speed governors.
She said this was a serious crime adding a crackdown will see culprits arrested. Ms Wakuloba revealed that drivers who tamper with the governors risk causing serious accidents.
She noted that speeding by drivers is mostly during rush hours because of greed for money. The traffic base commander said matatu operators value the lives of road users.
"The Kikuyu traffic department will continue with the crackdown so as to arrest the careless drivers. However, I send a warning to all drivers to ensure they do not tamper with speed governors as this will land them into serious trouble," said Wakuloba.
She said the drivers will be charged with dangerous driving which is a very serious offence with serious consequences.
The four drivers who were arrested are in Kikuyu Police station waiting to be charged in court tomorrow.
