Rivalry between matatu Saccos in Machakos has reached new lows with one of the companies decrying harassment by a competing group.
Two Saccos which ply the Nairobi-Kangundo road are accused of mobilising goons to harass the rival matatu company despite being licensed by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to use the route.
Speaking in his office on Thursday, the Eastern Bypass Travellers Company Chairman Michael Muita said his operations are being frustrated by rival companies despite receiving the required licences.
“I am pleading with the relevant authorities to enforce laws that will ensure goons do not dominate the transport sector and interrupt operations of other licensed companies,” said Muita.
This comes a week after the two matatu Saccos, which are accused of harassment, withdrew their services from the county government bus park in Tala protesting the entry of the rival Sacco.
Even as the business wars between rival groups continue, commuters in Kangundo and Matungulu Sub-Counties have welcomed the introduction of new Saccos saying such a move would help better transport services.
Some of the commuters said the Saccos should be allowed to operate along Nairobi-Kangundo road to demystify monopoly that has led to high fares of up to Sh350 for a distance of 60km.
