Landlords in Kikuyu have been urged to screen tenants before allowing them to occupy their rental houses.
According to the Kikuyu MCA Binary Wainaina, landlords should be compelled to demand certificates of good conduct from their tenants before leasing out their premises.
The MCA lamented the recent rising cases of insecurity in the town and its environs and called for concerted efforts between landlords and security agencies to beef up security in the area.
Waweru who was flanked by the area administrators was addressing mourners at King'ero village on Tuesday during the burial ceremony of the late Samson Njeru, 28, who was gunned down by armed thugs during a robbery incident at a nearby shopping centre.
"How can armed thugs enter into a house in an estate to rob and injure occupants without being apprehended by police?" asked Wainaina.
He added, "The recent wave of crime in Kikuyu town and its environs can be contained if chiefs act and ensure landlords have records of their tenants. It is the same tenants who are the robbing others at will."
The area chief John Mbugua who was in the same event said the administrators in the area are working around the clock to curb the menace.
He promised the residents that peace and security will be reinstated in the area.
