A mentally challenged girl from Bus Park area behind Makongeni Police Station on Saturday gave birth all by herself in an abandoned kiosk.
According to the residents, they were woken up to wails of a girl in pain and on rushing to the scene they found her holding the baby boy after a safe delivery.
The girl was living under her guardian’s care during the pregnancy. It is alleged that she was defiled and impregnated by an unknown person.
Well-wishers in the area donated clothes to her and her kid as she had nothing to cover the newborn with and took them to a nearby clinic.
Area MCA Mary Hussein later arrived and took her to another health centre for observation where she is expected to continue receiving post-natal care.
Hussein condemned the defilement of the young girl vowing to support victims of rape in the area to raise their children.
"Such people should be dealt with accordingly to avoid a reoccurrence. They must be hunted down," she said.
She said cases of defilement of mentally challenged girls have happened in the past but culprits easily escape unpunished.
