A Nyamira County politician who has expressed interest in the Gubernatorial seat has said the county assembly is full of incompetence and is "too lazy" to execute its mandate.
Speaking at Rikenye SDA on Tuesday September 22, during a fundraiser, Charles Mochama said MCAs were "sleeping on the job" and advised residents to elect better representatives during the 2017 polls.
He said the current leadership in the assembly was unwilling to execute its constitutional mandate in guarding public resources and blamed both majority and minority parties in the house for condoning corruption within the county government.
“I have been keenly observing the county assembly of Nyamira and I can declare that it isn't fit for leadership. Most of them are sleeping on their job and that is why the executive is finding it easier to waste public resources. It’s upon the people to make wise decisions in 2017,” he said.
Mochama who lost to the incumbent, John Nyagarama in 2013, urged residents to strengthen the assembly by electing MCAs who had vast knowledge in administration and law as a major step towards holding accountable the leadership of the day.
“You just cannot pick anyone to oversight and legislate. Choosing learned people is advantageous in the new constitutional dispensation and that can make devolution real to the people of the entire country,” he added.
He also challenged the public to work with opposition in the county to put the current leadership under pressure to deliver on its promises.
“The public should support us so that we can deliver as the opposition. We are the watchdog and our mandate can be felt if you back us in our efforts to fight impunity in the county,” Mochama said.
