Both Administration and Kenya Police officers have launched a joint operation to flush out unscrupulous motorcycle operators in Molo sub-county, a police boss has said.
Addressing the press in his office on Thursday, Molo AP commander, Joseph Mwangi was confident that the fight will be won saying that officers from both divisions had promised maximum cooperation.
“The rate at which young productive lives are being lost in Molo and its environs is sad, we have decided to join efforts to help see the perpetrators nabbed and charged,” Mwangi noted.
He referred to Wednesday’s incident where a family of four riding on one motorcycle was involved in a fatal accident as an indicator that the operations was a matter of urgency arguing that there was no need of a rectifiable mistake to continue inflicting pain in the whole society.
“You can imagine of how the situation will be like in a burial of four family members,” Mwangi noted, adding that “This was the highest order of irresponsibility because according to any normal person, four people whether old or young on one motorcycle is dangerous.”
Other than overloading, the AP boss singled out driving under the influence of alcohol, dangerous overtaking, over speeding and lack of valid driving licenses as major causes of accidents in the area.
He blamed parents and other care givers of encouraging the school dropouts or those who are unemployed to join the boda boda business without following proper procedures.
“We are calling on parents to help us restore sanity and professionalism in the business because it has come to our attention that some school going children are out of class so as to engage in it, the funny thing is how they are allowed to freely ride without even stepping in a driving school,” he noted.
He revealed that a major crackdown will be mounted in conjunction with the traffic department and the Molo OCPD with the defaulters destined to heavy fines.
“It will be a lesson for all because this irresponsibility must stop,” he cautioned.
