Residents of Tayari location in Molo Constituency were advised on Saturday by the area chief, Selina Kariuki, to use alternative fuel methods. Speaking to the residents in a meeting, he urged the residents to use renewable sources of energy such as biogas and also certified gas from the the Energy Regulatory Commission for domestic use.
This initiative aimed at conserving the Mau forests which is threatened by deforestation. Firewood is the main source of energy in the area as it is cheap and affordable. "Hatuna uwezo wa kununua cooking gas," Mary Wangui, a resident said.
This meeting was held just days after the president announced a drop in electricity connectivity fee to Sh 15000 which is still not affordable by the residents. The chief also commented on the use of energy saving jikos rather than the jua kali ones. He concluded by advising the residents to join Saccos which will enable them access loans.
