A children’s officer in Nakuru County has attributed the rot in society to ignorant parents who never want to be associated with the day-to-day upbringing of their teenagers.

At a seminar dubbed; The role of a parent in the modern society,’ in Naivasha on Friday, it was noted that majority of parents are to blame for the challenges being witnessed in society because of not being there for their children.

County children representative Nancy Jerono said things have been changed following the advent of the internet which even makes it worse for parents who never check what their teenagers are up to while alone.

“It’s advisable for a parent to check the child's phone once in a while just to be sure that no adult content is at their disposal,” she said.

According to Jerono, such kids were not fully grownups and could make wrong decisions if not strictly monitored.

“These kids are still maturing and are prone to negative vices coupled up with peer pressure that could hinder their decision making leading to a serious burden on the side of the parent,” she explained.

She called on parents and care givers to take up the initiative of advising young people about sex issues and life in general arguing that a majority of parents had absconded their duties allowing teenagers to research on themselves something she says was dangerous.

“It’s you to mould your child to a complete person you will be proud of, this only come by being concerned with the wellbeing of your child,” she advised.

The seminar brought together the county government, private partners, parents and other stakeholders drawn from various sub-counties in Nakuru County.
