Thika West Sub-County youth officer who also chairs the area’s Uwezo Fund will on Saturday distribute Sh5.32 million cheques to beneficiaries who missed out in the first quota.

Laban Mwangi said in his office Thursday that the constituency had received a Sh23.5 million from the Uwezo Fund kitty which had been distributed but Sh5.32 million as the remainder.

He revealed that the cash would benefit women, youth and persons with disabilities.

"This money was meant to boost the economic wellbeing of the beneficiaries and should be spent prudently on economically viable projects," he added.

Mwangi thanked the national government for initiating the revolving fund, saying it will economically empower the marginalised groups in society.

He, however, asked recipients of the loans to repay them promptly to qualify for more and to enable other groups to also benefit as well.

"Those who are not happy with the slashing of their applied loans to a minimum of Sh90, 000 should invest the money wisely so that they could qualify for bigger loans later," he advised.

He decried the high defaulting rate in previous government micro-credit programmes in the sub county saying the trend must stop as it undermined efforts geared towards uplifting the living standards of residents.

"Since the commencement of this programme, we have a big challenge from the beneficiaries who does not recover loans in time; all should note that the cash is meant to benefit all stated groups and thus infringing the laid down agreement will be dwelt with by law," he said.
