Athi River senior assistant commissioner has said motorists plying the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway should be more careful so as to reduce cases of road accidents along the road.
Addressing journalists at his office in Athi River on Tuesday, Phylip Lemalasia said it takes the efforts of all the road users to ensure safety on the road.
"All those using the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway should be more careful and cautious in a bid to reduce cases of road accidents which frequently claim lives of residents," said Lemalasia.
Lemalasia said though motorists should be more careful and drive safely, motorcyclists and pedestrians plying the road should also be careful so as not to fall victim to road accidents.
He said it was unfortunate that the number of those succumbing to road accidents along the road especially within Athi River Sub-County was increasing at an alarming rate.
The commissioner cited an accident that occurred last Sunday where four people died along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway at Primarosa area in Athi River after a saloon car collided with a lorry.
According to the Athi River police boss, Kizito Mutoro, three people died on the spot while one succumbed to his injures while receiving treatment at Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River.
The three occupants of the lorry who suffered minor fractures are undergoing treatment at Machakos level 5 hospital.
“It is unfortunate that a road accident occurred on Sunday evening that claimed the lives of four people. The saloon car had a tire burst losing control before the head on collision occurred,” said Lemalasia.
Lemalasia said most of the road accidents in the region result from human error and could be avoided if all those using the road adhered to road rules and regulations.
