Gatundu North MP Kigo Njenga has asked the government and the Catholic Church to resolve the current standoff on polio vaccination to avoid negative consequences.

Njenga, while addressing journalists at Gatundu North CDF office on Friday said that the uncertainty that has been created by the disagreement may render the polio campaign ineffective.

"I request the Catholic church and the government to agree on this polio matter so that our children can get the right vaccination. We do not want to suffer the consequences of either ignoring the church or the government,” said Njenga.

He also asked the two parties to rely on honest expert analysis to avoid misleading the public, which he says has serious consequences.

The nationwide door-to-door polio vaccination campaign for children under the age of 5 is expected to kickoff tomorrow.

The government has maintained that the vaccine is not harmful saying that the campaign will continue as scheduled despite the Catholic Church concerns.

"The ministry of health once again reassures the public of the safety of all vaccines used in Kenya," said Dr. Nicholas Muraguri, director of Kenya's Medical Services, in the statement.

"I therefore appeal to all stakeholders, especially the leadership of the Catholic Church, to continue supporting the immunization campaign in Kenya,” he added.
