Lari MP Mburu Kahangara has warned bar operators whose premises were closed down three weeks ago to stop intimidating and threatening chiefs in the area.

Addressing the public  at Nyanduma trading center on Sunday, Kahangara warned that legal action would be taken against individuals threatening chiefs.

The MP said that he has received complaints from a section of local administrators over alleged threats. He said that the threats are being investigated by the police and stern action taken against those implicated.

“The government will not hesitate to take legal action against people threatening government officers,” he said, adding that chiefs have been asked to make write statements over the threats.

Kahangara said that some brewers had shifted their anger to local chiefs who have been leading raids on brews.

The lawmaker said that the government will protect chiefs who are conducting raids while asking chiefs to continue the fight against illicit brewers and rogue bar operators within the sub county.

The Lari lawmaker noted that cases of alcoholism had significantly reduced following the crackdown on illicit brews that was ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta three weeks ago.

He said that illicit brewers had turned the area into drinking dens. The MP asked youths who had been trapped into drinking to seek the help of the government and participate in development.
