Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has called on county departmental heads to propose to the County Assembly Bills that can spur local development.

In an interview with hivisasa.com on Tuesday, Mutua said executives in charge of departments must come up with ideas on how they can improve the livelihoods of locals.

The governor gave the example of the many rivers that flow through the county but cannot be used for irrigation due to the prevailing legislation while others are drying up due to the poor leadership in the water companies.

He said the Water and Irrigation Acts must be looked into by MCA’s who should come up with local laws that will allow consumption of water in rivers for irrigation.

He said since increased agricultural production could only be possible through irrigation, his government had laid down plans for a multi million irrigation project from the Masinga dam and other water reservoirs.

He said the project will supply water to the more arid parts of Masinga, Kathiani and Yatta sub-counties.

He said Karimba-Gatua and Kamwene water projects in Masinga Ward would be up-graded to provide better service.

Mutua called on local leaders to work jointly to develop the county.
