National Campaign against Drug Abuse (Nacada) chairman,  John Mututho wants the agency to be given more powers to effectively deal with drug abuse in the country.

Addressing the media at Naivasha town on Monday, Mututho said that the agency currently lacks power to crack the whip on drug peddlers and barons.

He said that the agency is ‘toothless’ and cannot effectively deal with cases of illegal drugs involving prominent and wealthy peddlers and barons.

“As an agency mandate to fight drug abuse and peddling in the country we must be given powers that will help us crack the whip on barons and other traffickers,” he told journalists.

The former Naivasha MP also cited political interference to the agency saying that it has slowed down the zeal and fight against drug abuse.

He alleged that some prominent politicians linked to drug syndicates were interfering with the agency’s work.

Mututho also proposed that the agency be changed to a National Control Outfit saying that the move will give it a new phase and tighten the fight against drugs in the country.

The Nacada chair further asked the government to give the agency more resources to enable it executes its mandate effectively.
