Nakuru residents are expected to benefit from the dam project to be constructed by the Italian Government at Itare.

The project will go at a cost of Sh 34 billion according to the report given. The agreement was signed when the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi had visited the President in state house this month.

The study conducted by the project manager shows that, Itare is a favorable place to lay down the dam due to its population size.

According to the CEO of water board, Japheth Mutai said residents of Nakuru have been relying on boreholes for water and supply from neighboring counties.

Environmental experts declined the issue of fetching water from rivers in Gilgil and Naivasha claiming that, it will interfere with Naivasha lake basin.

The tender for the project was won by the Italians on September last year after receiving hundreds of bids from different countries.

The reason for choosing Itare for the project is due to its positioning near the Mau forest thus is expected to produce much water in a daily basis hence curbing the serious water problem in Nakuru.

The CEO of Water board said that, after construction of the  dam the water supply will be sufficient and benefit the county by attracting the investors who will participate in enhancing the development of the economy in the area.
