It’s time to take up the initiative and teach our teenage girls the importance of modern family planning methods, a local leader has said.

According to Women Representative Mary Mbugua, it was better to take action and avoid the consequences than ignore and see young productive girls suffer later. She said this while addressing women groups at the Nakuru Social Hall on Tuesday.

“The society should accept the fact that our young girls are sexually active and take up the responsibility of advising them on the importance of safe methods,” she said.

The women representative accused parents and teachers of sitting on the fence awaiting a consequence before coming out to condemn the girls.

“It’s 90% that in a girl’s daily routine she meets a parent, teacher or guardian, why wait for the young girl to mess before abusing her while you had the whole time to teach her how to prevent everything.” she explained.

Mbugua attributes the rot in society advent of internet arguing that the youngsters had phones at their disposal to research on anything they wanted to know rather than asking a teacher or parent.

She advises parents to be friendly and open to their children so as to be able to identify and rectify any mischief before it gets out of hand.

“Our problem is that we are not ready to tell our young people the truth, we are shy to speak up and it’s in turn affecting them,” Mbugua said.

According to research, modern methods of family planning are the sure way of keeping young people from unwanted pregnancies and other sexually transmitted diseases.
