The National Disaster Operations Center director Nathan Kigotho says the agency is looking for additional funds to bridge the current deficit in the disaster and emergency units.

Speaking Wednesday in Naivasha town at a meeting on the level of preparedness by the national government to mitigate the effects of El Nino, Kigotho said the agency is short of Sh10 billion and they are in the process of securing the deficit.

“We have raised Sh6 billion against the target of Sh16 billion,” said Kigotho.

Kigotho, however, said plans will not be deterred by financial constraints.

“We have put in place measures to ensure operations are run effectively without hitches,” said the director.

He also said the agency has established an Emergency Operations Center in Nairobi to establish communication links to all counties.

The meeting comes when preparations in Nakuru County to counter any eventualities have been reinforced with release of Sh2 billion.

Kigotho said they will not ignore the Met department warnings despite the false onset of the rains, and urged residents living in flood-prone areas to vacate.

“We are hopeful that El-Nino is around the corner and we are calling residents living in flood-prone areas to vacate,” said Kigotho.
