A non-governmental organisation in Mwiki, Kiambu County plans to educate and provide self-testing HIV kits to residents so that they can know their statuses.
Speaking at Mwiki Health Centre on Tuesday, Maurice Mutua, patron, Tuangamize Ukimwi, said plans were underway to help residents know their HIV status through training and distribution of the kits.
According to Mutua, most of the locals fear attending Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) centres, and training them on self-testing kits usage and the importance of knowing their status, a large population would be advantaged.
Mutua urged residents to attend such seminars to be educated on how to improve their health standards.
Grace Wairimu also from the NGO, appealed to the county government to consider allocating funds in its budget for such programmes.
On his part, Mwiki ward youth representative, David Njoroge, asked lobby groups to incorporate NGOs in their projects so as to reach more people.
“By incorporating the NGOs, the lobby groups would be empowered fully through capacity building, training, mentorship and giving aid to them for various projects,” Njoroge said.
